Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a common eye condition that affects how light focuses on the retina, causing blurred or distorted vision at all distances. It's not a disease, but rather an irregularity in the shape of the cornea or lens in your eye.

In an eye without astigmatism, the cornea and lens are perfectly round, like a basketball. This allows light rays entering the eye to focus evenly onto the retina, resulting in clear vision. In an astigmatic eye, the cornea or lens has an irregular shape, more like a rugby ball than a basketball. This uneven curvature bends light rays unevenly, causing them to focus at multiple points behind the retina instead of a single point. This results in blurred or distorted vision.
Symptoms of Astigmatism
-
Blurred or distorted vision at all distances (near, far, and intermediate)
-
Eye strain
-
Headaches
-
Squinting to see more clearly
-
Difficulty seeing at night
Causes of Astigmatism
The exact cause of astigmatism is unknown, but it can be due to:

-
Hereditary: Having a family history of astigmatism can increase your risk.
-
Present at birth: You may have been born with astigmatism at birth, which may not have been noticeable until later in childhood or adulthood.
-
History of eye rubbing: Severe and frequent eye rubbing can increase your risk.
-
Eye injury/surgery: Astigmatism can occasionally develop following injury or surgery on the eyes.

Astigmatism Diagnosis and Treatment Options
A comprehensive eye examination with our optometrists can diagnose astigmatism. The examination will involve a vision test to determine your ability to see objects at different distances in addition to keratometry and corneal topography to measure the curvature of your cornea.

Treatment options for astigmatism include wearing glasses, contact lenses and for some cases, refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK can be performed to permanently reshape the cornea to correct astigmatism.
Don't wait for vision problems to impact your child's learning and development. Schedule a comprehensive eye exam today! Early intervention with an optometrist can ensure your child sees the world clearly.
