Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia, commonly called nearsightedness, is a vision condition where distant objects appear blurry, while close objects are seen clearly. This occurs because the eyeball is elongated, or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Myopia is a very common eye condition, often diagnosed during childhood and adolescence.

Symptoms of Myopia

  • Difficulty seeing distant objects (e.g., blurry street signs, faces across the room)

  • Squinting to see clearly

  • Headaches (from eye strain)

  • Difficulty seeing at night

Causes of Myopia

The exact cause of myopia is unknown, but it's believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Risk factors include:

  • Family history of myopia

  • Spending excessive time focusing on near objects (e.g., reading, screen time)

  • Less time spent outdoors

Myopia Treatment Options

Early detection and treatment of myopia in children are crucial. Myopia can progress rapidly during childhood, and managing its progression reduces the risk of future eye problems like retinal detachment and glaucoma. Our optometrist may discuss the following treatment options:

1. Myopia Control Glasses

  • Hoya MiYOSMART: Utilizes DIMS (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology, featuring a central clear zone for distance correction surrounded by plus-powered lenslets. This dual-focus effect helps slow myopia progression.

  • Essilor Stellest: Incorporates HALT (Highly Aspherical Lenslet Technology), with a series of tiny lenslets creating "out-of-focus" light across the retina to reduce eye elongation.

  • Zeiss MyoCare: Uses similar defocus-based technology to manage myopia progression.

2. Myopia Control Contact Lenses

  • CooperVision MiSight: Daily disposable lenses designed for children aged 8+. These lenses have a central zone for clear vision and a peripheral defocus zone to slow eye growth.

  • Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Rigid gas permeable contact lenses worn at night to reshape the cornea. Children can enjoy clear vision during the day without wearing glasses or lenses. (Suitability depends on age and individual needs—consult our optometrist.)

3. Medications

  • Atropine Eye Drops: Low-dose atropine drops, backed by extensive research, have proven to slow the progression of myopia in children. They are safe, effective, and require consistent use under the guidance of an optometrist.
